スティーブン・スパリエ氏を偲んで
スティーブン・スパリエ氏が79歳で逝去されました。ここに謹んでご冥福をお祈り申し上げます。
スティーブンとは四半世紀に渡って一緒に仕事をしてきました。共通の友人であるジャン・ルイ・マジュレル氏がエディーアール社を買収した際に、スティーブンはワインコンサルタントとして、私はアジアのスペシャリストとして参加するように誘われました。1994年、私たち3人は「ラ・ラングドシェン」を共同で設立しました。家族所有で、持続可能な方法で栽培された、それぞれの地域やジャンルで最高のワインを厳選して、日本市場で独占的に販売することを目的とした会社です。
毎年のハイライトは、1月にスティーブンと一緒に1週間フランスを訪問することでした。スティーブンは定期的に日本に来て、アカデミー・デュ・ヴァンの再興に向けて活動しました。彼は私のスイスの家とブドウ畑を訪れ、私は定期的に彼のロンドンのアパートにお邪魔しました。私たちは多くの魔法のような時間と経験を共有しました。
数年前、スティーブンはアジアでの事業から手を引き、愛すべき妻と家族との時間を大切にするようになりました。しかし、無限のエネルギーを持っていた彼は、妻のベラとともに南イングランドに伝統的なブドウ畑を設立し、同じく伝統的な瓶内二次発酵のワインを生産しています。
スティーブンは、完璧な英国紳士にふさわしく、表面的には物静かな面がありましたが、私はすぐに「能ある鷹は爪を隠す」人であることを知りました。彼の内面を知ることで、私は人生で最も素晴らしい人間関係と経験を得ることができました。
スティーブンがワインに専念できたのは、彼が経済的に自立した人だったからだと言う人がいます。しかし、それはスティーブンの特徴である情熱、献身、そして卓越性への飽くなき探求心を完全に見逃していると言えるでしょう。商業的に評価されている一部のワインジャーナリストとは異なり、スティーブンは常にあらゆるものを試飲する姿勢を持ち、彼の周りに集まってくる何万ものワインや人々の中から最高のものを見出そうと客観的に判断していました。
スティーブン、今私にできることは、ただただ感謝することだけです。あなたが今どこにいようとも、より多くの素晴らしいワインを味わい続ける機会が十分にあることを願っています。
スティーブンは、彼と関わり合いのあるすべての人に、絶対的なインスピレーションを与え続けるでしょう。 親愛なる友人よ、あなたがいなくなるのはとても寂しいですが、私たちはいつもあなたのことを心の中で思っています。

I had the great honour of working with Steven for a quarter of a century. Our mutual friend Jean Loius Masurel asked us to join him when he acquired Hediard – Steven as wine consultant and myself as an Asia specialist. In 1994 the three of us co-founded La Languedocienne, with the objective of exclusively representing in the Japan market a handpicked selection of boutique, family owned, sustainably-farmed wines which were simply the best of their respective regions and genres.
The highlight of each year was Steven’s and my annual joint one week trip to France in January. Steven regularly came to Japan where we worked together to rekindle the fortunes of Acadenie du Vin. He visited my Swiss home and vineyards, and I was regularly a guest at his London flat. We shared many magic moments and experiences together.
Steven withdrew from our Asia ventures a few years ago to spend more time with his lovely wife snd family – being nonetheless possessed of endless energy he established with Bella an iconic vineyard in south England producing equally iconic wines méthode traditionnelle wines.
Although Steven was superficially on the quiet side as befitted this the perfect English gentleman, I soon learned that still waters ran deep. As I got to know the man within, I embarked on what has been for me one of the greatest relationships and experiences of my life.
Some have said that Steven was able to dedicate himself to wine because he was a man of independent means. That is to miss completely the unique passion, commitment and unending quest for excellence which was Steven’ s hallmark persona. Unlike some of the more commercially-acclaimed wine journalists, Steven was always open to taste everything – objectively trying to see the best in all the tens of thousands of wines and people who came into his orbit.
I can only say a big thank you, and express the hope that wherever you are now there will be ample opportunities to continue to taste more fine wines.
Steven will remain a total inspiration to all who crossed his path. My Dear Friend, you will be much missed but always in our fondest thoughts.
